As a rule, Americans do not have that kind of faith in government. Quite frankly, considering history, I cannot understand why anyone would. Government is not there to protect anyone.

Ok - now that is just simply an elitist outlook. What you're saying with that is, unless someone reaches a certain socioeconomic level, he isn't truly human, and doesn't deserve the same rights and freedoms. That kind of attitude just makes me sick.
