The 'identity' is a strange one. Nagin was a GOP business executive who backed and endorsed Bush in 2000 and switched to Dem only to get the mayor's seat. They picked Jefferson in rejection of the Dem party. The state itself has unusual races of 'characters' (example: David Duke (white supremacist) v. Eddie Edwards (charismatic but corrupt) for Governor).
