The amount of energy used to make the ethanol is generally larger than the amount of energy produced by burning ethanol (unless your ethanol comes from sugar, which in the USA, it doesn't).

Additionally: Ethanol as a fuel in a combustion engine is less efficient than gasoline refined from oil . (It would return less miles per gallon in an automobile than the oil refined gasoline).
