Interesting - you believe they need to be "understood" because of their "desperation". Extraordinary. There is no moral or ethical frame of reference here. Many people are desperate and despairing and do not spend years planning the cold-blooded murder of thousands.
I would say their acts were
evil. Perhaps that is why we are disagreeing about this.
