Matt and Eric have already told me that they wouldn't even respond if a stranger on the street abused them verbally, since doing that might escalate into a violent conflict. I brought out the spitting example since that would be even more provoking than someone abusing you verbally.

actually the law varies from city to city and state to state concerning what constitutes a physical assault.
in this locality , if you spit on me I am within my rights to respond to a physical attack ( this means you get your ass kicked )
as an enforcement officer , I would encourage you to go get cleaned up and not assault anyone else or you would find yourself in jail for your behavior.
