When Ronald Reagan was elected president, his political experience consisted of 8 years in state government, as governor of California. He had no national political experience or foreign policy experience.
When Jimmy Carter was elected president, his political experience, consisted of 8 years in the state legislature and 4 years as governor, for a total of 12. None of it involved national or foreign policy experience.
When W was elected president, his political experience consisted of 8 years as state governor. None of it involved national or foreign policy experience.
When Bill Clinton was elected president, his political experience consisted of 12 years, 2 as state attorney general and 10 as governor. None of it involved national or foreign policy experience.

Lyndon Johnson, who essentially was forced out of office by his own party because of the Vietnam war.
George Ford, who served less than one full term and was defeated for reelection.
George H W Bush, who served one term and was defeated for reelection.
