I think those two points go hand in hand. Too many of the sheep know next to nothing about what a candidate has done or said in the past. Also, they fall for the sound bites and "analysis" from the media because it's easier that way. I'll wager a large percentage of the voting public read the headlines but not the story.

The politicians know this and focus on that. If you give long explanations of your positions, like Joe Biden does, the people get bored and tune out. If you scream "CHANGE" a few hundred times in front of cameras and microphones, you get a LOT of people in your pocket.

In fact, on election day I think I'll write in the guy who wanders around the supermarket saying "change?" to people. He MUST be qualified to be president!

Great hair, a nice smile, generational brotherhood, lack of a facial tick, etc...... all reasons that voters choose their candidates. Inspiration , apparent youth, or a fresh face is just as good as any of the others.
You left out, "like to have as a next-door neighbor", "have a beer with" and "would let your daughter marry him".
