I thought Obama made a good start of explaining this in his speech, but I would say he has much further to go if he is to get the support of non-ultra liberal whites.

This opportunity to explain this issue may be even more important than whether or not he gets elected president. I hope he goes further and doesn't take the position that he's addressed it and it's time to move on. Our racial divide is a deep seated problem that needs to be addressed in depth if it's to be overcome.

Unfortunately for Obama, I really didn't see a race issue in this campaign until it came from his pastor. Obama has gotten where he is today from white voters, who had, at least until now, enthusiastically supported him. They & myself included, believed that he was more than capable of bridging that gap, working with white & black & across political isles too.

I read his race speech & it's a good one, as always. It still does not explain how he could be a 20 year member of a racist, seperatist church, & then give a speech on how we should all bridge the gap between black & white.

If he really believed what his speech was about, then he would have left that church or at least tried to change ideology within it many years ago.

He didn't. He admits listening, to the often times, hateful, racist remarks of his pastor. Something of which he mentioned his white grandmother did, which made him "cringe". Obama credits his pastor as the inspiration of his book. This is a man that Obama respects.

So, in my opinion, his speech is nothing more than trying to save his own candidacy. I can't buy into something that just doesn't make sense.
