Reagan wasn't exactly presidential material the last years of his life. He disclosed his Alzheimer's disease five years after leaving office, when it had already began to take effect. It wasn't long after that his public appearances were discontinued.

We had a family member who began suffering from Alzheimer's in his early 70s and it's an extremely unpleasant experience with total debilitation of the affected individual.
