I think that gasoline is under-priced, and that the subsidies that it has received have done significant damage to us as a nation. We're in a weaker position because of our dependence on gasoline.
I remember the gas lines in the '70s. While it was nice because somebody in the line would inevitably do a McDonald's run (hey, I was a kid and liked McDonald's at the time) and so it was quasi-social, it was also a HUGE warning sign to us. Yet, we chose to ignore it, and spent more money on roads and K-cars, and less money on effective mass-transit.
We've got to catch up; the sooner we do it the less it's going to hurt.
And, yes I understand that the result will be increased costs in food and goods, but I'm willing to pay that price if we can get some real results to finally wean us off the oil barrel teat.
