As O'sullivan pointed out your source is wrong. I'm also pointing out that your wrong in your analysis. A Terrorist group does not equal a legitimate nation state recognized by the world. How can you make these types of correlations? BTW when was there a terrorist attack attributed to Iran? Maybe I missed it.

Indeed. Canada, for example, hasn't had a warm relationship with Iran. In fact, it's been quite chilly too, part of which stems from Canadian assistance of American hostages when the Islamic regime started. However, it does have formal diplomatic relations with it as do most nations.
One setback by the US not having diplomatic relations with Iran is the loss of trade that other nations pick up, most of all oil. 56% of Iran’s oil exports head to Asia (Japan and China getting 1/3 of Iran's oil overall) and 29% to Europe. The U.S. gets cut out.
