Hong Kong and Taiwan are two completely different scenarios there. With Hong Kong, there was intense negotiations several years prior to the handover after the 99 year lease was up. With Taiwan, it is semi independent with no ties to any European Colonialism from past years. Additionally, Europe has no higher moral high ground than the US. We can talk about Yugoslavia, East Timor, Cuba, Rwanda, Nigeria, Sudan, and a few other places.
