Honestly, at the undergrad level, the sciences have a LOT of rote learning involved. Thus my struggle with o-chem: I understood the chemistry, but I couldn't memorize those stupid red-ox reactions. In my entire MBA program, I've not had to memorize much of anything (except for a few finance equations); it's all been conceptual thinking.
One never has to memorize organic. As long as one is mechanism-oriented, they can use the knowledge of mechanisms to predict the outcome of a reaction.
