Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!
Greetings.
I am a single 22 year old senior political science major, history minor at Northwest Nazarene University within Idaho. I am currently seeking an unpaid internship so I can graduate but the pickings appear to be slim (academically, I am great but not so much when it comes to opportunity). My ambition is to work in the intelligent field, as a prosecutor, or a policy analyst, ambitions that seem nearly impossible to realize from where I stand right now. The closest I have to religious beliefs is monotheism though I am somewhat knowledgeable about Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
My recreational interests include: reading science fiction (descriptions of extraterrestrial societies, relationships and first encounter situations between mankind and extraterrestrials, spiritually uplifting and altruistic stories), video games (not so much playing them anymore as hearing about them), heavy metal music, MST3K, reading movie reviews, and debating.
My favorite books so far have been: Perelandra and Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, Up the Walls of the World by James. A Tiprtree, The Right Hand of Dextra and the Wildings of Westron by David J. Lake, Eifelheim by Michael Flynn, and Melinda S. Reynolds self published Angel Warrior series. Unfortunately, reading science fiction is a more or less recent practice of mine so I have not read too many books (since I am limited to inter-library loans and time constraints).
I am here to debate issues, relax, and chat about recreational activites, and have fun (much like what most other people do here, I hope).
I judge all issues on a case by case basis and I reserve the right to change my opinions at a later date for whatever reason so do not go looking for a consistent political and social opinions and try to pigeonhole me into being liberal or conservative. If you want an end all, be all description of my beliefs then pragmatism is an accurate label.
I am a capitalist but I find economics to be a very boring, black and white affair when it is stripped of its social aspect. For this reason, I am not very knowleadgeable about economic processes or finance. The same goes for the issues of healthcare, medicare, or whatevercare, I simply do not find them to be interesting issues (yet).
My main strength is in analyzing, observing, and assessing social, cultural, philosophical, and political consequences, implications, and trends and situations. How good I am at that is entirely up to you for I can be lackadaisical about doing so
I form opinions on matters based on my own sense of justice, morality, and privacy, and my belief that all nations should be democratic and modern. However, do not confuse me for a saint.
I am no fan of biological determinism.
I am no expert at science, even rudimentary physical principles.
My opinions on some matters are bound to seem very cold, flippant, misguided, brazen, and more than a little bizarre to you.
I consider politics an extraneous activity, something people engage in for their own ambitions, rights, ideals, and amusement after they have all their basic needs (shelter, food, water, family, job) settled. As such, I am very willing to utterly ignore ideological differences, be jovial with others over fun and amusing things unless I sense you have a grudge against me.
Never construe anything I say as a desire to force a system of government or modernity on others unless I explicitly say otherwise. Even then, keep in mind that I am more inclined to avoid the mass of humanity in question than attempt to interfere with their life (see username) and that all of my arguments are purely hypothetical and theoretical (I could not care less if they were actually put into action or not).
I can be picky, uptight, paranoid, and a little depressing at times. As such, I will sometimes have a difficult time expressing my thoughts completely and coherently (what seems obvious in my mind may not in yours, that is sometimes the problem), so always give me the time and oppurtunity to explain myself.
Keep these things in mind when you address me and we will get along swimmingly.
I will hold off on posting for a few days in the general forum so this can sink into the community here and so I can get a feel for this forum, so to speak.
