And the first use of the word "faggot" in this thread was by whom?

Thought so. I'm disappointed that I forgot to use it in the OP. I'll try harder.

There was actually, surprising, alot more civility in our political coverage on BOTH sides back in 1991.
What? Are you nuts?

If anything, the 24 Hour News Cycle was worse if only because there was no Fox News to provide a semblance of an opposing point of view.

Yeah, there was more "civility" because traditional MSM and leftist CNN were firmly in control. There was no real Internet of which to speak. Real easy to say things are "peaceful" when you have no real opposition.

There was quite obviously a problem with media balance - the only thing that outpaced the growth of conservative news and opinion on the Internet was pr0nography. Fox News launched in 1996 and didn't take long to become the highest rated 24-hour news channel (and stay that way up to the present and beyond). That's a free market for you...

I call a spade a spade. And the title was quite intentional. You see, I find that symptomatic of the overall GOP problem - they are seemingly reluctant to do what it takes to win. They are retreating from their principles in a way I haven't seen since GHWB "compromised" himself out of office and into a fucked up SCOTUS. The GOP has to expect to be labeled as "petty", "mean", "childish", and "partisan" if they actually start doing what they need to do. The MSM is very predictable that way. The GOP tactic of letting Democrat shenanigans slide - for whatever reason...usually involving the dignity of our country and its system - needs to cease because it ain't working.

I'm still waiting for a singular GOP action that can be compared to what I have already listed for the Democrats - one that did not get slammed by the slings and arrows of mainstream (supposedly "objective") media coverage. I, myself, brought up the Texas redistricting - it is the "best" example of which I can think and, yet, does not pass muster.

For example, if the GOP was doing shit right, they'd have had Cheney [quite reasonably] "retire for health reasons" in, say, 2006 and picked a new VP, positioning them for a solid run at the POTUS in 2008. That would have been a good tactic to get [something resembling] a real conservative past the MSM concentrated effort to garner McCain the nomination. But...nooooooooo...they wouldn't dare try it lest the MSM gods suggest the GOP was playing "politics" with, um, politics.

GOP...sound off like you got a pair.
