That's true. Did you see the excellent John Adams series on HBO? The funniest scenes was where he and/or his wife Abigail would read the kinds of vicious and sneaky attacks and hit jobs (anonymous letters in Publius, etc, much like anonymous emails today) made on him by enemies such as Hamilton, with guys like Jefferson even secretly paying for them. They were also quite successful (especially in failing to get re-elected POTUS) and played a part in why he isn't as well elevated in the national remembrance as those who smeared him.
