We give drivers written and driving tests.
There is no test to buy a gun.
There should be mandatory gun safety classes and a written and shooting test. There should be deep criminal and mental background checks and even a psychiatric test BEFORE a person should be allowed to buy a gun.
No more of this 15 minute background check, buy a gun the same day you walk into the store.
It's insane. Why would anyone be against all this? Only law abiding sane citizens should be able to buy guns!

What's insane Sam is the never-ending quest by people understandably concerned about gun crime thinking overly prohibitive and harassing measures will cure the problem. All is needed is the measures in place as I described and that's all one can do on that end.
None of what you are saying will prevent a criminal or nut from getting one. They can simply get them the old fashioned way--the black market trade. Worse, such weapons aren't even as traceable for crime purposes.
You're from NJ right? Ask yourself and Frank Lautenberg of NJ whom you mentioned the following: with all of NJ strict and basically prohibitive firearms laws, how 'safe' exactly is Camden, Newark, Atlantic City, etc.? Try googling 'most dangerous city' and get your answer.
You don't go after licensed drivers that obey traffic laws just because some drivers drive suspended and drunk, recklessly, etc. Such types either obey the suspensions and laws or they just violate it driving anyway because they don't give a shit about the suspensions and laws. Thus, you go after them, not those not doing it.
