I think he needs to wait, keep waiting and it is indeed not a bad tactic...just let Obama run ahead as he sees fit until about the middle of the debates to put through a push to win. Make sure Obama only leads within a handful of points and doesn't get too far ahead though.

These town halls are the sort of thing where McCain will probably do well, so having them now is not wise, he'll probably edge back to level soon enough just in time for Obama to name a VP and get another small bounce, then McCain can claw back with his own and they can keep doing that until the debates and through mid October.

Personally i am thrilled that this didn't go ahead, i never expected it to like i don't expect McCain's "President's questions" to go anywhere either but the prospect of those morons sitting around in a town hall boring the shit out of everyone is just nausiating to me.
