My understanding of the history of the war is that Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945 when Hirohito telegraphed his ambassadors in Bern and Stockholm to inform the Allies that they accepted all terms of the surrender.

This is according to Rohers and Renzi, two historians of the subject.
