cruisers and close in destroyers: 8", 3 and 5". they got to close and got hit by Jap artillery. but not as good as 16". from 25 miles away. still they did their job. my dad's cruiser supported the N Africa landing in nov 42. then later gunfire support for Patton's advance across Sicily. and the invasion of France.
no. we are talking about their service during WW11. right up to the last day.
