The cool thing about torpedos is that they can be fired, with insane accuracy, from miles away. Assuming someone on deck did see its' underwater wake, by the time they saw it they would have about enough to burp out half a prayer to their god before the ship explodes and sinks.
Obviously, you have no knowledge, whatsoever, of what a torpedo can do. A Mk46 slamming into the hull of an oil tanker would be Armageddon on the high seas.
Then again, Hell, you don't even know what a torpedo is, so your opinions on the matter are easily dismissable...

I guess I just didn't think anyone could actually be so ill-informeed on the the subject to suggest we use one in the situation.
Steve, this is a Supertanker, it's three football fields long, it's also double hulled and compartmentalized.
Assuming it's not atomic a torpedo MIGHT blow a hole into one compartment, which MIGHT (certainly not guaranteed) then catch on fire and burn. It's not going to go up like a bomb, tankers aren't made that way and crude oil isnt that volatile. Your most likely results, the pirates kill the crew, scuttle the tanker and escape, there is an environmental disaster, second most likely, the tanker breaks in half, the pirates still kill the crew and still escape, there is an envirnomental disaster,. third most likely, the tanker sinks, but before it does the pirates still kill the crew ,still escape and still cause an environmental disaster.
Are you beginning to get the idea? or do you still think the only reason the US Navy hasn't decided to use all the neat torpedoes it has is because they're just a bunch of liberal wienies?
Now my question is why they haven't used SEALs to sneak aboard and kill all the pirates. They did that in a movie fer Crissake, you'd think someone would have the idea by now.
