I think it depends on what is accomplished. Eliminating official poverty could be considered a significant accomplishment for our first world, political-economy. Simply transitioning to a welfare-state economic model from a warfare-state economic model could help the rest of the market in our global economy, since market based economics are more conducive to improvements in standards of living through the use of mutually beneficial trade.
