Re: Israel kidnaps Cynthia McKinney and a boat full of aid workers?

CNN's version is here

Gaza group: Israel takes former U.S. rep into custody – The CNN Wire - CNN.com Blogs

This is actually an ongoing story, which HAS received some attention from the mainstream press over the past few months. Former Rep. McKinney held a news conference in which she announced that she would be joining the Free Gaza group and that she would be on board theSpirit of Humanity. She did so knowing that the Israelis had intercepted several previous vessels sponsored by this group and that some of their members had been detained. The Israelis responded by stating that McKinney would be treated like any other "criminal" who attempted to break their blockade of Gaza. Today's report is simply a culmination of McKinney's effort.

This mini-drama is being played out on a larger stage. The Israelis, who control access to Gaza, have severely limited the amount of food, fresh water, electricity, medical supplies, and fuel which can reach the population they hold captive there. They do so under the guise of preventing weapons from reaching elements which frequently launch attacks against Israeli forces. The fact that most (if not all) of what they block is vital to the health and well-being of the Palestinian people is of no concern to them. Their intention is to make the Palestinians suffer until all the attacks stop.

McKinney is a well-known American, but in this instance she represents no one, and may actually be in violation of US provisions which prohibit any but the President from conducting foreign policy. But the truth is that she cannot actually conduct foreign policy, nor does she have significant influence with those who do.

It is an ill wind that blows no good, but there seems to be nothing good going on here.
