Several conservatives backed Owen. The 1st one that came out for him was Sarah Palin--then a couple of more heavyweights in the Republican party. What surprised me--was that Newt Gingrich stuck with the rino simply because she had an R behind her name & was fearful--that a split party would solidify a democrat win. Newt was WRONG--Sarah Palin was RIGHT.

After all the tea parties & town hall meetings over the summer--one would think the RNC would get a CLUE. "Do not give us liberal or moderate republicans." This country is mad as hell & we want solid conservatives in the republican party. And if they can't give them to us--you can bet we will form a 3rd party in this country that will be the conservative party.
Newt's main argument, that you shouldn't second guess the local party was wrong on two accounts. First of all, he confuses the party establishment with the party. If Scozzafava had been the choice of the GOP party voters in a proper primary that would have been one thing, but she was not, she was the hand picked standard bearer of the local party establishment. Second, given the state of the party, arguing that we should defer to the party establishment which is a collection of people more concerned with their own seats first, and expanding the base second, is folly; especially given that Newt established himself and the party by bucking the party establishment back in the day.
