As fourteen of the twenty-nine supporters of wanted ex-security chief Igor Giorgadze arrested yesterday are charged with treason, President Saakashvili hailed the arrests.

"They will be punished severely and get what they deserve in the frames of law. Those people who stand behind them and sponsor them will see this clearly," the president said from Poland, where he is attending an economic forum.

Speaking with Black Sea Press influential National Movement MP Giga Bokeria said that Giorgadze and his supporters did not conceal their ties with the Kremlin and the fact that their party is financed from abroad.

However leader of the Hope Party and head of Giorgadze's charitable foundation, Irina Sarishvili, called allegations that Giorgadze's supporters were plotting a coup "absurd".

"The government invented this to avoid social unrest… If the government wants a revolution they will get it. I call upon all opposition political parties to embark on civil disobedience and large-scale demonstrations against the government," Sarishvili said at a press conference on September 7.

Sarishvili said law enforcement's claims that the arrested activists were plotting a coup during a May 4 meeting were "cynical".

"According to this absurd allegation Temur Zhorzholiani [arrested leader of Giorgadze affiliated Conservative-Monarchist Party] was at the meeting. But we can prove that Zhorzholiani was in a hospital on May 4 after a heart attack," Sarishvili claimed.

Along with Zhorzholiani, leader of the Anti-Soros protest movement Maia Nikoleishvili, sister of Igor Giorgadze's wife, Nino Topuria, and various Justice local party leaders were also arrested.

Fourteen of the twenty-nine people arrested have been charged with state treason for involvement in the plot, they are being held at the interior ministry's Constitutional Security Department, the others have been released. Zhorzholiani, Nikoleishvili and Topuria are among those charged.

Lawyers of the detainees state that their clients deny the charges, they also complain of procedural violations during the arrests.

Sarishvili said that footage released by the authorities which, along with showing arms and money apparently seized in the raids, showed a man and woman with their backs to the camera giving details of the 'secret meeting' in which the alleged coup was planned, was fake.

"None of the people that we saw from the back are the members of Justice, the Conservative-Monarchist party or Hope," claimed Sarishvili.
Are you folks not ashamed, if you see on tv how Georgian "policeman's", wearing US-made and US-look-like uniforms..with the Sheriff star are arresting oppositionaries accused of farcial preparing a coup d'etat ?...(remarkable is that according to governmental "evidences" it seems, as if nearby ALL opposition leaders planed to do it with their own hands...with self made explosives and hand weapons as if they would prepare a provincial-bank robbery)
Are you not ashamed of supporting such results of "flower revolutions" bringing to their countries nothing but chaos and poverty?
Are you not ashamed to have elected such a hypocrite as your president- which constantly tries to cover such governmental violance with US-"democracy"?
