Has Cuba been in any way irrational in international ties?

It's surprising to see that Cuba has maintained the position of Communist reform for so long.
Perhaps it is due to having the US so close. I wouldn't call Communism wrong...usually it never becomes ideal, however under Castro, who can disagree with the advances that were made?
