Well yes, it does seem that Americans tend to define social programs that way. Which is again why i don't think he will get much traction. Yet it is odd, polls indicate that the majority of Americans actually support some sort of universal health care, but Obama will run into opposition from powerful corporate interests, not from Americans in general.
Btw, how come universal health care in Canada has not resulted in people choosing not to work just because they get free health care? That does not make sense, I don't get free food, a free house, and a free car, i still need to work to live. But if i am not very wealthy i don't have to be worry about health insurance at all, i know i will be taken care of no matter what the cost of the procedure? Do you not see any societal benefit to that? Or do you prefer breaking people because they cannot afford medical treatments..... Have you ever seen a family devastated from illness? At least we can take care of them no matter what their paycheques amount to. That is progressive.
