American cities were designed for cars with lots of street space. European cities (except for a few German ones) were not. It might damage the economy to some extend, but not the tourism I think. Either way, it would totally be worth it.

I don't think it would make much sense to do an all out ban across the E.U. or force cities to take such measures, even within an individual country. Each city needs to examine its needs and desires and make the decision themselves. The pedestrian sectors of some European cities are very nice, but they still have motor vehicle access to those parts of the city in other areas. Not all cities are the same, and I still believe it is unreasonable to cut off motor vehicle access to entire sections of a city.
