I heard it in the news - TV5 abroad / Antenne 2 in France - a comparison of the proposals from SR and NS in taxation questions. They also mentioned the "bouclier fiscal" and the suppression of the inheritance tax.
The video mentions it again.

VAT is economy neutral - i.e. it does not affect companies since they can recover it. It is really just a consumer tax, simply it goes unnoticed whereas higher direct income or social taxes would be very unpopular.

Somehow, NS needs to finance his platform, doesn't he ?

In Germany, the VAT went up from 16% to 19% as of 01. January 2007.
In France, it's already at 19,6% - quite high. Should it go up to the level of Scaninavian countries (25% ?).

In France you can borrow on very long periods, until 40 years, and propably 50 years soon. I think it's a nonsense.
My grand-parents/ father side, working class people with a very low income (my grand-father was a mechanic and my grand-mother housewife), managed to buy a piece of land and build a house. They borrowed on 40 years. Very honestly, the only way for them to own their property !
Somehow, the house was later donated to my aunt.
(This is why I really do not understand Sarkozy's plans - there are ways to give your property to the next generation if you do it during your life time ...)

On the other hand, my sister is getting a divorce at the moment and I can say that the house is the reason - because to live only to pay the mortgage is not a life.

My last comment on this is that property in France is comparatively to other European countries, most specially in Northern Europe but also in Italy, very affordable. The real problem IMO are the high rents in large towns, not just in Paris.
To make everybody a "propriétaire" is only a way to escape the problem.

But who cares anyway. Tomorrow France will have a new president and this Preisdent will be Nicolas Sarkozy.
