I wonder if it isn't about power. People feel so powerless about so many things these days that when they get a chance to hit back--at ANYBODY--they just go crazy. I can't see how this is about money or winning, by this time they have no money left, it's about vengeance, expressing anger and frustration at whoever is weak enough not to be able to hit back. I suspect that much criminal stupidity is based on frustration and the feeling of helplessness/hopelessness. Look at suicide bombers--people hardly ever blow themselves up to kill others unless they are so desperate that they simply don't see any other way to strike out at the ones they perceive as being in control of their lives.
It's idiotic, for less than $65 million they can hire a hitman to bump the guy off.
