Re: how much do you pay for health insurance?

I'm afraid that depends entirely on what sort of insurance one gets (i.e. how much coverage, how big a deductable, % coverage, features such as dental, vision, ect)

Re: how much do you pay for health insurance?

There are many levels of insurance in the US, varying from completely prepaid to 'catastrophic care' where the individual pays the first few thousand dollars of any medical expenses before the insurance starts paying. Further, in many cases, health insurance is subsidized by the employer, distorting the true cost.

At my employer, individual plans vary from $55/month for a catastrophe plan to $150/month for a plan where any doctor visit costs $15 but there are a lot of restrictions on doctors and possibly on precedures and such. These are the direct costs to the employee; my understanding is that the employer pays an additional 50-100% on top of that, but I don't have easy access to those details.

I pay about $160 per month for my wife and I. That includes a decductable of $500 each and a co pay of $10.00 for any office visit. Once I get past that deductable I pay nothing except the $10.00 unless a catastrophic injury takes the cost of my health care to an astronmical sum, I think it is something like $750,000 or $1 million something like that. I get a fairly wide choice of doctors and get the care I need when I want it as opposed to when someone else says I can get it. As Evil said though the company pays another $$200 on top of that for the coverage. There are like others have indicated a variety of plans tp fit pretty much anyones budget. What is really sweet is if it were just me, no wife, I would pay nothing for the care, although I do not know how long they will be able to keep that up.

Is this plan perfect? Nope but I like it.

Re: how much do you pay for health insurance?

It's individual policies, and really pretty representative of individual policies. When I was on COBRA, I paid $660. It will all change Monday, as I will be covered under the State policy. My wife joins the month after that, so it's pretty much a freebie then. My heart surgery racked up a quarter-million dollars a few years ago.

You know now that would be something they could do to make the system better. Since pooling does help spread costs they should allow all kinds of groups, small business and the like pool their health care resources. We get a good policy because we have over 750 people in the pool. Although the more i think about that my last employer had thousand of employees and their policy choices were worse that my current employer.

Re: how much do you pay for health insurance?

There's a big difference between group and individual policies. You employer fronts most of the cost. What I pay is normal cost for insurance. I just don't have an employer to pay for it (until Monday).

I understand that spad, but pooling would still help offset some of thoses costs wouldn't it?

Although I have every Insurance license there is, the Black Art of Rating is still beyond my comprehension. The actuaries are little, white-skinned, pale men, hidden deep underground in windowless bunkers, consulting ouija boards, tarot cards, intercepted alien communications and God knows what other arcane sources they make up to decide how to gouge you legally. If a normal Human ever understands what they do, they change the rules immediately. It's kind of like fighting a speeding ticket.

Being in the industry myself, they are in fact everything you indicated, but they are well paid white skinned pale men hidden deepunderground in windowless bunkers, consulting ouija boards, tarrot cards and intercepting alien communications. When it comes to actuaries I do not think God has anything to do with it.

I haven’t paid for health insurance since 1983.
I believe it was 17 dollars a month with a 200 dollar deductible on an 80% payout.
