Trans Fats

Yesterday the town I grew up in banned smoking in public places. I was very surprised since this is in Kentucky which depends on tobacco crops. What found more shocking is that NYC may ban trans fats from restaurants. This seems like a very radical idea and I was wondering how many people on this site would support such a thing. I will wait to share my opinion later.

The city of my residence banned smoking in public places two years ago. It really went by smoothly, with minor complaints.

Banning transfats is not radical, creating transfats is radical.

Re: Trans Fats

Of course it is a great idea. Since you can't ban stupidity (eating in a fast food rest. is a death wish: preservatives, high sodium, frozen food, artificial color, beef that looks like baked worms) .

I could see creating them for economic gain as something that is not exactly ethical. But then again I also feel that using the government's power to force people to behave a certain way and to throw personal freedom and choice out the window as being unethical. With smoking you have the second hand smoke argument but with trans fat the danger is only to the person making the choice.

Re: Trans Fats

I was also wondering why the ban would cover restaurants but not stores that sell food with trans fats.

But same thing happens with hard drugs like heroine, the danger is only to the person making the choice

I do not feel they should be illegal personally.

Re: Trans Fats

Is the porblem here the use of trans fats or profit from selling food with trans fats in them?

Prohibition laws are a joke, too.

Use. There is so much food that contains them, when you sit down in a resturant you have no idea how much there is in them, and it's really an ingredient that is cause major health problems.

I think there could be alternatives to a complete ban though.
It's not additive and not a vice like heroin where it causes a whole host of social and psychological issues from usage.

Couldn't they require restaurants to put warnings on the menu for items with trans fats in them? That seems less drastic since it puts the decision in the hands of the individual but still will make sure they are aware of what they are consuming.

How would a resturant know what the trans fats are in every meal they serve?

If you can measure calories then why not trans fats. Maybe give them a tax break to help pay for testing their foods.

Re: Trans Fats

Smoking in Bars/Restraunts banned several years ago here...same as with Andrewl - some fuss at the beginning, Bars said they would lose a bunch of money, some said they would close...we have two more bars in town now - none closed.

The Trans-Fats is different IMO - I do not believe this has to do with individual rights, rather an action the FDA shoul dhave taken along time ago against Food manufacturers.

I find any legislation that asks the government to be my mommy to be repellent and insulting.
