Probably easiest to say "Speak English or die."

Why should I have to spend even more money so that American police officers can be taught multiple languages so that criminals dont get a beating once in a while?

Does not the illegal alien who breaks the law and lives here for 20+ years, as this person did, have SOME obligation to learn the local language?

I have no sympathy for this guy. None.

Works for me. I bet an AMAZING number of people who "only speak Spanish" would become fluent in English in a very big hurry...

Re: Police Department being sued for not requiring officers to speak Spanish

From my many years on the street as a paramedic, I have observed an interesting linguistic phenomenon - some people speak English in inverse proportion to the proximity of law enforcement officials.

Dozens and dozens of times I have seen people who spoke English before the police arrived suddenly revert to "no habla" and "no comprende" once the police are on the scene.

Not unless there be legislation on the books requiring it. Without such a legal requirement on the books, I can't see the lawsuit proceeding. That is to say, the suit is serious, but legally frivolous.

They learn English real quickly when that cell door slams shut.

According to Wikipedia:

If a case could be jeopardized thus, wouldn't it be common sense that the officers actually had a basic knowledge of the language of such a substantial part of the population ?
Or, we could place pictures in the application for American citizenship so they’ll know what a badge and uniform means so you don’t hit them when they try and arrest you. (They hit back…)

I see this quite frequently at the bar. The Mexicans will bet on a pool game (which we don't allow but can't always catch) and when it's time to pay up, they don't understand English! They do understand when I tell them I'll call the police because the first words out of their mouths are "No five-oh, por favor!"

And thats why when you get arrested they need no longer to read you your rights.

If a crime has occurred, it is the police officer's duty to arrest a person for questioning. It is not his duty to administer beatings to "criminals". Police officers do not have the power to judge whether a person has committed a crime or not. Only a vested judge or jury can do that. He can arrest on suspicion, but suspicion is not punishable by law.

I followed the link and read this article six times. Where does it suggest in any way that this guy was illegal?

Re: Police Department being sued for not requiring officers to speak Spanish

I wonder when we can get an official/national language.
