I very possibly will, too, for awhile anyway. Industry hires alot of veterinary pathologists, and they pay well (I'm thinking about my $113,000 in student loans- just from vet school!, and having two kids in college soon). But they call it the 'golden handcuffs'. Once my loans are paid off I'm back to academia...or a zoo, or wildlife diagnostic lab.

Sorry for my delay in responding. I just saw this.

I am an organic chemist (with an undergraduate in chemical engineering). Synthesis is my professional passion. My work is in small molecule probes for medical imaging.

Obesity is a hot topic now!

It's easy to goof off in the forum, so I can relate .

Re: Who are you?

I'm a programmer (but not the dungeon type), undergrad degree in CS from U Arizona. Pretty versatile but will never, never work for a defense contractor (anyone who's seen my posts will likely not be surprised). Hobbies, love music--all kinds, all cultures, all types, love dancing--although a back injury has limited that to a large degree .

My wish is that Hollywood would make a movie that makes nerds (like me) look like heroes, along the same line of firefighters, doctors, policemen, etc. I can only count two so far off the bat: Pirates of Silicon Valley, and Sneakers.

Persons I most admire: Tim Leary, Einstein

Thanks for the info, Solletica. The movie REAL GENIUS might interest you in that the good and bad people are all nerds; funny, thoughtful, and it has a great ending.

I was called a nerd in school too, I got good grades but was socially inept--nothing like straight A's to piss off the popular kids.

Yes, HACKERS is excellent, I have a copy of it, but not one of Mare's REAL GENIUS.

Re: Who are you?

There are several new people posting about whom I would like to know more. If you are comfortable doing so please post a short biographical statement--or, as in some cases, a diatribe--that we all might have a chance to understand you better and thus communicate more clearly with you. Thanks.

Re: Who are you?

I have been asked to introduce myself. I am what is known among bibliophiles as a “reader”. Many years ago, I began, desultorily, to read. It is probably ironic that the first book that I read was Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, which is reputed to be the first novel in the English language. Since then, I have read a great number of books, and more than a few of them several times. It is not uncommon that I read an entire book within the space of a single day. I am not a particularly rapid reader, but I suffer from insomnia, and for these many years, books have been the companions of my sleepless hours. Even so, there are many, many books that I have not read, great rivers of literature and learning that I have yet to course. More recently, my reading has become more select, and my studies more focused. Some of the books that I read now have been out of print for several centuries and only available in the great libraries or in private collections; and some I must need translate myself, which can be very tedious, not to say frustrating. Still, whenever I start a another book, it is with that same spirit of Robinson Crusoe when he takes up his salvaged copy of the Bible, and begins, for the first time, to read it in earnest.

I am sure as hell glad that I dont have to worry about that shit. How much do you pay in healthcare per year?

Re: Who are you?

wow. i made the lamest comment earlier. anyway, heres goes.

I'm 31. programmer, unmarried and single (what a shocker) - i'm actually not very talkative at all and make up for it in my posts to this board (and others). Some say i'm an extrovert in an introverts body.
I like chatting on this board because of all the compelling topics. Everyone interests me in one way or another.
I play guitar and drive a fast car. I do drink beer but am not an alcoholic.
What else can I say? I have a goatee, um. I work out. This is starting to sound like a personal ad.
My work is challenging but not impossible. I dont mind admitting I know nothing - thats my humble ethic.
I generally avoid personal relationships and do not think that people who do so are "loners" or socially retarded or have something wrong with them. I think there is less value on deep relationship these days.
I have moved around alot because of various obligations which are pointless to describe in this context.
I hate moving. I have an endless supply of boxes and never see them as garbage (boxes garbage? nooo way).
I come from a non-practicing catholic background. I'm a mulatto (do I need to explain what that means? ok. I will but you need to ask).

Now, its your turn. Go:

Re: Who are you?

Who Am I?

What a good question, and at the same time what a awfully difficult question to answear.

Im a progressive realist who understands the inportance ofthinking ahead to tomorrow instead of looking at the rewards to be gained today. I am Pro Abortion Pro gay marriage. I support what i believe. Im a very opinonated person.

In terms of my country (UK) i think that we need to understand the inportance of taking care of national issues rather than rushing to sort out International issues. I am agaisnt the war in iraq and support the withdrawl of troops from iraq and i also support the redeployment of said troops to Afghanistan. I believe that we need to focus on health care and the NHS and the redistribution of money into such areas.

In terms of my feelings on the US (Something im equally interested in) i feel that some of my feelings on UK politics relate to US politics. I feel that occupation of Iraq needs to end. Heath care and insurance are to be looked at. I think also that the US educational system needs to be looked at, money needs to be invested and reforms made.

There are my views but as to who i am personally:

I am a History student from the United Kingdom, i was brought up comfortably and now live life to the full. I love Jazz and red wine aswell as sports, expecially american sports. Im a Cubs and Yankee fans aswell as a Jets and Knicks fan. Play sport as much as i can. Love betting, play Poker with the lads and bet on horses sometimes. Not stupid bets tho. Anything else you want to know just ask

Re: Who are you?

Thank you all, it's nice to read a thread where no one is arguing but just speaking their piece in peace. Encourage anyone you know who has not posted here, to do so.

Where does the name "Wallaroo" come from?

Re: Who are you?

Well, since we're throwing in hobbies and likes/dislikes...along with everything I said in my earlier post:

Reading, outdoor exercise (running three times a week, walking two other days) and hiking/backpacking, martial arts (I used to be much more active in them), school, work, tutoring Spanish to my friend has become a pretty big hobby of mine (he really wants to learn)...

I dig the Cubs, the Astros for baseball. Italy for soccer.
Music - ALL KINDS (not kidding - from oldies, to metal, to mariachi), but recently I have gotten into Jazz a - lot. Charlie Parker has been my most recent favorite...
I play guitar and love it like almost no other.
I'm 23, single, and for the time being - I prefer it that way. : )
