Abstinence education

I'm all for it. I say we mandate it not only in schools, but make it a requirement of work contracts as well. We can let Ted Haggard run the new federal Department of Abstinence. Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself.

So, let's start a campaign & write our congressmen & beg for such legislation. What do you think?

Submitted by your faithful & obedient servant,

Mark Twain

Re: Abstinence education

I feel abstainence is a great thing to and should be taught in schools.

The only method of birth control and STD prevention that is 100% guaranteed is abstainence. You can't focus your teaching on how to not get pregnant or STD's by making sure the kids are protected. If you do that then you are just encouraging them to have sex which presents more risk than abstaining.

And, what's really effective is depending on teenagers to use their self control and best judgement!

Teenagers will have sex. End of story.

So let's stop them from getting pregnant, shall we?

Re: Abstinence education

Those types of things are best left to parents to teach (abstinence, etc.)
If schools want to teach about safe-sex, STDs, etc. then I say go for it. Parents should be teaching the importance of abstinence on their own time. That isn't a job for the school.

Sex Ed did not in any way, shape, or form "encourage" me to have sex.

Being a teenage boy at the time provided me with all of the "encouragement" I could handle. And them some. And then some more.

Oh, and By the Way, Mark Twain.... Totally abstaining from total abstinence can be a very tiresome affair. Be sure you stock up on electrolytes before pursuing such an endevor, or you may become a casualty of your own exceedingly good fortune.

Re: Abstinence education

But if such legislation is brought to a vote (I'll say in the Senate, since the numbers are easier), and the vote was 5 in favor, 30 opposed, with 60 abstentions, wouldn't that mean it passed?

I guess this means the other 5 senators were in the cloak room abstaining from abstinence?

That's like saying that schools shouldn't teach driver's education, because it encourages teenagers to drive.

Teenagers not driving? Maybe that would be a good thing.

Why would teenagers not having sex be a good thing? I don't get it.
