Is it "school" when you hire a babysitter to look after your children on a Friday night?

Isn't the OP misleading to post that a school banned legos if it's not really a school?

If the babysitter decides legos aren't what she wants the kids to play with is it a national outrage as the OP is suggesting, or do you just find a new babysitter if you think legos are what you want your children occupied with?

I suggest this thread is misleading and stupid.

I suggest this thread is misleading and stupid.

This is an extension of the school, same teachers, etc. but the actual program was after-school care. I suggest that the idiots that ban Legos are stupid and those that can't understand the "outrage" aren't too bright either. Oh, and the title of the piece in the OP is "Exploring power, ownership, and equity in an early childhood classroom" and was written by the woman who decided the ban should be initiated.

Re: School bans Legos!

So you disagree with everyone in this thread who are arguing that it wasn't a school?

And if so, you believe that schools should spend time having kids play with legos instead of teaching abc's and 123's?

Re: School bans Legos!

In Japan, they call them 'regos'.

That comment was just as relevant to the discussion as all the capitalism/communism comments.

Our school-age childcare program — the "Big Kids" — involves 25 children and their families. The children, ages 5 through 9, come to Hilltop after their days in elementary school, arriving around 3:30 and staying until 5:30 or 6:00. Hilltop is located in an affluent Seattle neighborhood, and, with only a few exceptions, the staff and families are white; the families are upper-middle class and socially liberal. Kendra is the lead teacher for the Big Kid program; two additional teachers, Erik and Harmony, staff the program. Ann is the mentor teacher at Hilltop, working closely with teachers to study and plan curriculum from children's play and interactions.
You can call it whatever you want but it's a place for kids to go after school with a structured atmosphere that includes teachers. I have no problem with a playtime during school hours or in after-school programs. Developing social skills is just as important as learning abc's and 123's.

Which it sounds like they were doing. They didn't actually remove the legos, they used them as a teaching tool to explore power structure. You might disagree with the ideology, but I suspect the kids parents didn't.

A few days after we'd removed the Legos, we turned our attention to the meaning of power.
They did remove the Legos but brought them back. I still think it's stupid to constantly interfere with the way kids play.

Re: School bans Legos!

Ide only ask the kids to build an effigy of their teachers then give them bb guns and use them for target practice. take pics then finish 'what i did on my vacation' assignment.
