Vegan couple found guilty of killing malnourished baby


A Superior Court jury in Atlanta convicted a vegan (VEE-gun) couple of murder and cruelty to children today in the death of their six-week old, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jade Sanders and 31-year-old and Lamont Thomas will receive automatic life sentences for starving the boy, who weighed just three-and-a-half pounds when he died.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

Lets be vegans

These mental cases starved their own fuckin' kid to death. Because they "wouldn't use animal products". Humans are OMNIVORES, We're SUPPOSED to eat "animal products".

God people do stupid shit. Glad they get life sentences. They deserve it.

While I personally find the idea of veganism to be completely retarded, I do think it's possible to raise a healthy baby on a vegan diet. As such, the vegan diet in this case is a red herring. This baby died due to bad parenting and nothing else.

That's a good point actually. I won't offhandedly agree that it was strictly bad parenting that led to this kids dying though. Poor judgement and poor CHOICE played a part in it (obviously), but we don't know if these people outright refused ... we don't know the minute by minute circumstances that led to this. That these peoples "vegan" dietary choice played a large PART of causing the kid to die seems obvious at least.

But, yes. With some knowledge of the dietary requirements of Homo Sapiens Sapiens you CAN acually get away with a vegan diet.

It's a LOT of work though. There are some nutrients generally supplied from animal flesh that need to be compensated for by eating more of certain things and even maybe supplementing.

Obviously these two had no business being "vegans" and trying to administer a strict "vegen" diet to their newborn.

They'll pay for their ignorance.

I just did a quick google search and there are mounds of pages available that provide plenty of information how to raise a healthy happy baby on a vegan diet. These parents obviously did no research on the matter and I guess just figured that if it was okay for them, it was okay for the baby.

Breast milk is the best way to grow a healthy baby. Did they think breast milk was an animal product?

I was thinking the same thing. 6 weeks old...apple juice...why not just give the baby jolly ranchers to suck on. The vegan diet was no match for the incompetence of the parents.

I'm serious about breast milk being the best for the baby, do you disagree? I'm serious about these dumbells thinking breast milk is an animal product, therefore they can't breast feed, why else would they deprive their baby of it?

I wouldn't necessarily say 'smart' due to them basing their entire eating habits over an inaccurate view of the dairy industry.

Farmers know that in order to produce good milk, they have to have good cows. And they know that in order to have good cows, they must get good milk. In the large majority of farms (in fact, just about all the ones I'm familiar with), calves are breast fed from their mothers. It saves time and money from having to hand feed the calves yourself.

Cows are milked a single time every day. This is due to time constraints in larger farms with hundreds of milk bearing cows and also keeps the quality of milk higher. The rest of the day, the cows graze and tend to their young.
