Yes- this looksl ike a case of him wanting to have everything his way; have kids, with all the benefits and none of the responsibility. Granted, if he's paying, he also gets visitation rights. But if he wants none of the responsibility, he also has to give up the benefits (like a relationship with the kids). If you want to donate, do it through a sperm bank, and you'll never be asked for child support (or even know whether it ever results in a child).

I think it sets a dangerous precedent.

How long before a sperm bank gets a subpoena to provide records of who donated sperm for this lesbian couple or that lesbian couple? Hey, they did it to someone that a couple knew, why not try doing it to someone that a couple didn't know?

I don't see the issue being that the guy took an interest in the kids. I see the issue being that, with this, sperm donors, anonymous or not, could be on the hook for child support...

No, I don't think so. There is a legal contract with a sperm bank, and one thing it does is to sever all parental ties between the donor and any offspring. So, you have no right to know who got the sperm, and they have no caim on you. In this case you have a private arrangement between friends, where there were clearly parental ties between the donor and his children. All it says is you can't have it both ways (a relationsip and no responsibilty).
The fact that it was a lesbian couple is immaterial to the case: it could as easily been a single het woman, or in some states even a het couple (I think some states still have laws that consider any child born in wedlock to be the husbands, even in the face of genetic evidence to the contrary).
