Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

It was a substitute. I wonder what the qualifications are for subs in Illinois.

In my 9th grade English class we got shown the Romeo and Juliet that showed a nipple.

I guess I'm still traumatized, huh?

Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

I think the lawsuit is laughable but I also think that showing R-rated movies to 8th-graders in the classroom is wrong. Kids are in the classroom to learn, not watch movies, especially ones that they couldn't go to the theater and see without a parent or guardian. I'd make sure that that person never subbed at the school again!
Saying the girl was "traumatized" is really a joke though. She's either extremely slow, extremely backwards or just plain lying! I mean, 8th grade and she's "traumatized" by a movie? Oh, and "psychological treatment and counseling"? Yeah, no doubt she needs it but it would because of an asinine grandfather, not a movie, IMO.

What kind of idiot teacher would show an explicit sex scene to the kids?
If this is 8th grade, most of those kids wouls probably have seen sex on cable a million times. But they shouldn't show it in school.

Tornados happen every year to all kinds of people. God doesn't sit up there throwing darts at a globe saying "Ok, Hickville USA has a gay in it. I'll send a tornado to flatten its trailer park"
Were there explicit sex scenes in Brokeback? I don't remember.

I agree with Mrs. M 100%. What a stupid thing to do and the teacher ought to be fired. The school should also be disciplined but a law suit? Give me a break. Sounds like he's out to make a buck or make a point - neither of which is warranted.

He doesn’t work that way parse, however he does lift his heavenly influence from the earth when man becomes evil.

Think of making out with your grandmother, that’s the horrible unnatural feeling we experience. There never was intolerance, we were just designed for some things to sicken us.

Sounds to me he wishes to deter such a thing from happening to his and other children from occurring. A law suit is the only way to stop these people.

Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

I honestly don't see why anyone would create such a fuss over this ...

I mean, it's not like the kids were shown gay porn. Perhaps they saw a couple of guys kissing, but i'd be willing to bet thats about it.

The people who are against this would probably think nothing of showing a regular film to these kids where the star kisses his lady, or the other way around ...

Hypocrisy, anyone?

JHC, I'm curious - how would you feel if the kids were shown two heterosexual adults kissing deeply, but nothing else?

I'm pretty most of the ones protesting here would write that off as showing true love, or some such thing.

My point is that if the kids were shown XXX stuff of any type, then yes - one has a perfect right to be outraged.

Otherwise? I think not.

Maybe not the world you inhabit, but it sure does occur in the world I inhabit.

Talking about sickening one, this is exactly the type of intolerant post that sickens me. Not much of whats said on the forum really sickens me, but the use of the n word is one thing, and THIS type of post is another.

Anyone who can equate a sexual partner to one's grandmother needs his head examined, to be honest.

Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

We're far too litigious a society.

Fire the sub and move on.

I think the argument that anyone would need psychological treatment after seeing it is complete bullshit.

I don't agree with it being shown to the class, but this is nothing more than a "get some" attitude being shown by the parents...

Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

Do we know why the sub showed it in the first place?

Obviously grandad just wants some money, but I'm sure the substitute would have let the kid leave if it bothered her that much. In 8th grade you're 13 and 14. By that age, you're responsible for what you choose to see and do.

Re: Parent Sues Chicago School Board Over Brokeback Mountain Showing

...And if there was a god, he'd be more pissed at people like steveox pretending to know what god wants. I doubt he'd care about gay people more than anyone else. I can't seem to drill it into Ox's brain, but nowhere does the bible say that homosexuality is a "sin." Christians these days can't seem to differentiate between "sodomy" and "homosexuality"

What she said except I'd fire the sub and pull her teaching license.
