Political Correctness Run Amok...
I couldn't believe this when I read it. A school in Colorado has banned... well, just read it:
This Is Just Fucking Stupid

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
So address those situations with those specific individuals.
As a society, we seem to have contracted this mental illness where even the most isolated of incidents cannot be addressed just with the individuals involved. A blanket ban is the preferred solution these days, it seems. Particularly within the educational system, where "zero tolerance" has led to some truly idiotic events. Matt

We're not talking about someone having their lunch money stolen, we're talking about playing "Tag". Don't wanna' be chased against you will? Don't run. And, if someone does "tag" you, don't chase anyone. Kinda' puts a pretty sudden stop to the game, doesn't it? My God, what power one child can wield...

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
How is this 'political correctness'?
It's simply shitty school policy. Let's all totally freak out that one elementary school out of the thousands upon thousands we have in this country set a ridiculous policy. The sky is falling and all that jazz. |

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
Think what you want. Bullying is rampant in the schools. Events like Columbine are a direct result of it.
Is banning tag the best approach? No. Do we know what else the school has tried? No. The article wasn't clear. I suspect that if there were just one or two individuals being a problem, the school would have addressed it. However, if there is a systematic bullying of a group of kids via this "game," then it needs to be stopped.

The "bullying" which resutled in that incident was on a completely different level, and trying to compare the two is stupid...

Maybe you were the bully, instead of the bullied in elementary school? I'd say that the patterns are established early. Being harassed and bullied isn't being forced to play tag. There's something else going on.

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
I think you are giving the school system too much credit for common sense, Pram.
Incidents of monumental stupidity from school administrations are pretty commonplace. We just had one here in Central Florida. I'll put something together on it.... Matt

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
Oh, I know. I worked for the schools, remember? I just want to believe that they're honestly trying to do the right thing, instead of just some sort of bullshit rule.
If I'm wrong, I'll be more than willing to admit it. Perhaps I'm particularly sensitive because of the absolute hell that school was.

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
Yeah, I can buy that.
We just had a middle school keep their students in the school until 9:30 pm because of a thunderstorm. Not, mind you, a severe storm. No NWS watch or warning was issued, just a thunderstorm. In fact, it wasn't even raining when they decided to hold the students - someone heard a rumble of thunder in the distance and went into panic mode. (Florida, for those unaware of our greatness, is the thunderstorm capital of the country. We have more thunderstorms in a given year than any other place in the US). Here's the kicker - when the students' parents came to the school to pick their own children up the administration refused to release the children to their parents. The administration tried to blame their computers being down for preventing them from releasing the students. Now we're talking 7th through 9th graders here - students who are clearly capable of recognizing their own parents...... Fortunately, a couple of Sheriff's deputies brought some badly needed common sense to the situation and compelled the school to release the kids to their parents, after verifying with the child that these were, in fact, their parents. Apparently, the impetus for this policy is that two or three years ago, a child was hit by lightning a half an hour after getting off the bus a block from his house, so the school decided to implement this police "for the children". BTW - the elementary school a block away sent their kids home on time - (while it was light out, and not raining). Matt

Re: Political Correctness Run Amok...
That's pretty pathetic.
I do agree, there are some HORRIBLY stupid things done at some schools. There are also some amazing things done, too. I'm just hoping for the latter.
