Anyone want to protest in Berkeley - get a designated parking space and free permit!

Berkeley gives Marines the boot
City Council says recruiting station not welcome; military mum for now

BERKELEY — Hey-hey, ho-ho, the Marines in Berkeley have got to go.
That's the message from the Berkeley City Council, which voted 6-3, with Gordon Wozniak, Betty Olds and Kriss Worthington dissenting, to tell the Marines that its Shattuck Avenue recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."
It also voted 7-2, with Wozniak and Olds dissenting, to explore enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines and to encourage the women's peace group Code Pink to protest in front of the station.
In a separate item, the council voted 8-1 to give Code Pink a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.

Sweet. Anyone who wants to protest in Berkeley now gets a designated parking space and a free weekly sound permit.

Guess the Berkeley city council didn't think that all the way through....

I don't think they a doing a good job with thinking, fullstop. I was first curious whether or not this issue had to do with sexual orientation discrimination ordinances, but having read more about it, the city council actually supports the measure due to vocal support of Code Pink's agenda. IMO, they have simply drank the Kool-Aid of extremists/radicalists.

And typical for all who drink Kool-Aid on any given issue(s), stunts like this only hurt themselves and their causes and set them back, especially as they create favourable stereotypes for spindoctoring by ideological opponents which exploit Kool-Aiders as strawmen for all reasonable non Kool-Aid people to whom they are opposed.

In addition, these Kool-Aiders even give ideological opponents a freebie promotion. For example, this was manna for Jim DeMint (R-SC) to get going with his own grandstanding for some easy self-promotion by denouncing the city and committing to introduce a bill in Congress to stop federal funds being used in Berkeley until such time as the city reverses its declaration regarding the Marine recruitment centre.

IMO, though, it's probably a good idea to create a federal law regarding military accessibility. DeMint spoke about funding withdrawal, but the US military is also an issue of federal power.

The federal government is entrusted to raise and support a military, and in areas where the federal government is entrusted with certain powers, the supremacy clause applies insofar as state action. Consistent with the First Amendment and case law regarding it, it is wise, IMO, to codify acceptable, prohibited and First Amendment protected but sanctionable (loss of funding) behaviours so that impediments to military recruiting and other actions intended to frustrate military functioning either be prohibited or discouraged.

yes pete, I just saw this as a blurb on the tele....yes it appears driven by code pink, their spokeswoman spoke for the city council etc........well okey dokey, guess its time to apply the Solomon amendment to an even greater degree or create a new amendment if that’s not within its mandate.......cut off all federal funds to the city.

That's great ! Over here in Europe you have to stand around in the cold when protesting and get a coach or train to the protest. In The USA they give you car parking spaces for protests, much more civilised . Truly the land of opportunity !

Do you think these people are pro-American?Preventing the military from doing it's hardly sounds American. These are the same people who chant free speech all day when they want to say something and will drown out anyone whom they disagree with so that their speech gets silenced or not heard.

BERKELEY / Facing off over Marine Corps / 3 war opponents chain selves to door of recruiting station, and right-wing blogosphere goes ballistic
As the right-wing blogosphere railed and a U.S. senator vowed financial retaliation against the Berkeley City Council for its effort to boot the Marine Corps out of town, three war protesters ratcheted up pressure from the left by chaining themselves Friday to the front door of the downtown Marine recruiting office.

The demonstrators snapped their locks shut at 7 a.m. and spent the next 7 1/2 hours blocking the door, waving and chanting as hundreds of cars driving by honked in support. Finally, at 2:30 p.m., police snipped the chains and arrested them.

It'd have been a lot easier to say "nothing."

Each side can call the other anti-American. It doesn't really add anything to the discussion.

The USSR regulated the freedoms of their people, much like Berkely, Commiefornia is now.

You might be too young, pram. I still remember the old stories in the days before Glasnost, when protesters were set up in virtual dachas outside the offices of the military in the USSR to enable them to better protest the Soviet Army's recruiting efforts. It was all over the news.

So are you endorsing the idea that people should need a permit before they can protest and express their opinion?

No.

I can see the need for parade permits if there is a large number of people expected and there will be a need for crowd control (for safety). However, those permits must be easy to acquire, and distributed without discrimination.
