Beijing bans public smoking to "clean up air pollution" ahead of Olympics

I find this hilarious. China is among the most polluted countries on Earth, and there are grave fears being held for the health of visitors and athletes during the Olympics ... and China's solution is to ban smoking in public. Yeah, I guess 'cause all that day-long smog is the haze from all that tobaco ... and all those coal-powers plants that pump gas into the atmosphere has nothing to do with it huh?

I wonder what the opening ceremony will be like, as Australia will very few (if any) athletes marching in the ceremony, and will be represented by officials, for fear that the health and fitness of our athletes will be compromised by prolonged exposure to the air. In fact, our team won't be arriving in China until two days prior to the games.

A smoking ban in most public buildings has come into force in Beijing.

The measure has been introduced for health reasons and because the authorities are keen to clean up Beijing before the Olympic Games.

For every three cigarettes lit world-wide, one is smoked in China; almost a quarter of the population smokes.

The city authorities will impose a ban on smoking in most public buildings, and say they are organising 100,000 existing employees to act as an enforcement team.
