Re: Who Controls Education ?
Considering that all evidence shows that 'abstinance only' sex education has given America the worst rates of teen STD's and teen pregnancy in the developed world but is still required for federal funding, doesn't that mean that the church controls education?
I know the memory of some of my teachers talking to us about sex ed would be enough to turn me off it. We just need to make sure sex ed teachers are older motherly/fatherly types, it would leave the kids educated and embarrased enough to not want to do it for years. |

Re: Who Controls Education ?
Regardless of who controls education catering to the lowest denominator in primary and secondary schools with higher education pitching financed graduate programs for revenue purposes in fields where there's little market demand has put us way behind the global education curve.

We are so far behind other developed nations in math and science it is an embarrassment. The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world's richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries. In math, only four countries had average scores lower than the United States. Students in 23 countries had a higher average score, and those in two countries did about the same as the Americans. U.S. Teens Trail Peers Around World on Math-Science Test - washingtonpost.com There is no excuse for these scores. Our education system is the laughing stock of the developed world. It is time to take education policy away from the socialists and give it back to the people. |

Re: Who Controls Education ?
It seems to be mostly a lack of interest.
A terrifying one, too. The lack of science-educated citizens is going to really hurt this country.

[edit] If only one of the networks would come up with a popular TV series glamorizing engineering and/or a pure science. We could have the Perry Mason effect or the ER effect, and see more kids take up one of the subjects. [/edit]

Re: Who Controls Education ?
Yeah, it's terrifying. I'd have to say that if there's a Konspiracy, it's by other nations to keep American students as ignorant as possible of the world around them (including geography, chemistry, biology, etc.) so that they remain stupid, blind consumers.

Re: Who Controls Education ?
Servicing the market with the desired product is normal, and it's rather difficult to blame other nations for US entertainment levels.

It invites flaming on this forum to suggest anything derogatory about my fellow Americans, but......lazy?

Re: Who Controls Education ?
Could be. Sometimes it's easy to say lazy, when the frustration with the fact that there are few pursuing it sets in, though. It's tempting to say, TBH, and sometimes I do believe it applies.

Re: Who Controls Education ?
Something provides motivation in individuals from the formative years on up and that's normally a parental function with educator reassurance during primary and secondary education. With lots of visual escape entertainment from out of the cradle used as a babysitter through high school, apathetic parents and educators, it would seem inevitable that a majority fall into a rut of laziness.
