America walking back to the dark ages.

Greetings and Felicitations,

The more time passes in this country the more disgusted with the whole place I get. Instead of becoming more enlightened we are walking, no running, towards the middle ages attitude faster than you can say Enlightenment.

When the rest of the world is struggling to move away from dogma, repression and fundamentalism I find that America is flying towards it. I never thought I would see a time when tolerance would become a bad word.

I hope that McCain doesn't win. I really do. The last thing we need is for the fundamentalist conservatives to have control for four more years. Freedom and tolerance has already took such an amount of blunt force trauma I don't think it will take much more.

Sincerely Yours,
C. David Neely

You're not alone :-)

That depends on who you ask what "enlightened" means I suppose.

As for "...walking, no running, towards the middle ages attitude...," I'm not seeing this at all. But I'm not sure what this "middle ages attitude" you refer to means either. Kind of subjective I guess. Kind of depends on who you ask. Again.

Compared to "the rest of the world" America is one of the most tolerant places a person can live in. Look around. America made possible the technology that allows people of any and every way of thinking to communicate en masse via the internet and forums like what we have here.

It seems you may just be having a bad day. Maybe you're finding there are those whose opinions differ from your own ? Maybe you need to better learn this "tolerance" you've been explaining to us. That you're telling us that we're losing somehow.

Freedom and tolerance are going nowhere. Both have their limits though no matter where you go. Don't worry so much a better day will come. It certainly isn't going to depend on who gets thrown into the whitehouse. We get the same lying, theiving gasbag either way.

To those who continue to grow more and more disgusted with this country, perhaps you should be reminded that nobody's going to try to stop you if you want to leave. Please, feel free to get the fuck out...

And leave this great nation to the mouth-breathing, gap-toothed nearderthals?

What patriotic citizen would do that?

That is a pretty general statement. Anything specific you want to address?

Patriotic..........

I guess being a patriot to you means being unpleasant and making tiresome arguments.

Only to those learning-challenged of our fellow citizens without the legal mental capacity to understand them.

Cheer up..........The Dems will still be in the majority so all is not lost.

I can't say the same in two years, but at least you don't have to immediately pack for Canada.

Maybe you should concentrate on getting along with people that are different from you instead of trying to force your beliefs on them at every opportunity.

That's generally what "tolerance" has come to mean today.

Tolerate my ideas and beliefs, or you're being intolerant. You may not speak against my ideas or beleifs because I've told you they're intolerant.

And I won't have it, I won't tolerate it.

Off with you, silence.

This is verging on hysteria, IMO. No matter how much I didn't want a candidate to win an election in the past, I never - EVER - was disgusted with my country. Never.

And, no matter how much I didn't want that candidate to win and he actually did, I still was never disgusted with my country.

It's about time folks started getting a grip and realizing that if their "guy" (or "gal", now) doesn't win the election, the People have spoken. I take great pride in our system that allows the People to speak in such a manner.

Hyperbole and hysterics get you nowhere.

As I grew up I watched the country move from a place where people didn't really care for science and thinking towards a more rational approach.

Now as we start working through the 21st Century that progress has stopped.

Honestly. I am getting tired of the believers in the great sky father and their ancient tribal rulebook deciding that everyone should go back to being their religion whether they like it or not. What they want to do is throw out every vestige of real scientific progress and turn back to some mystical idea about how the world really works. At the same time they want to take everyone that doesn't fit into their worldview and marginalize them until they fade into obscurity and oppresssion. They want to tell you who you can have sex with, when you can have sex, who you can love, what to do with the fetus if one happens to get made, what books you can read, what shows you can watch, what words you can say, where you can say them, when you can say them, ad infinitum.

I think that if McCain and the poster child for fundamentalism he has chosen for a running mate win the situation is just going to get worse.

A long diatribe to be sure. Just the way I've been feeling lately.

Sincerely Yours,
C. David Neely
