most vegans I know are still breastfeeding at three years. The norm seems to be you don't introduce them to ANYTHING else until they are about 6 months old. no solids, no alternatives - unless bottled water in summer - IF necessary - which usually it isn't.

I agree 100% - the problem is not that they were vegans, but that they exhibited a depraved indifference to the welfare of their child.

The child weighed 3.5 pounds at time of death. There is no way these two did not know this child was in bad shape long before death.

absolutely. child health experts recommend children don't have cow's milk until they are 12 months old - their stomachs can't cope well with it.

most milk formulas are cows milk based, and while they are specially adapted - there are still some differences. bottle fed babies are more prone to constipation and foul smelling faeces, and more prone to long term health problems ... including obesity.

in addition - the use of milk formulas instead of breastfeeding, which was encouraged by nestles in the seventies in many third world countries - led to a sharp increase in infant mortality.

then there's convenience. Shit. why any mother would want to bottle feed and have to go through all that bullshit with mixing formulas, sterilising bottles, worrying about the temperature of the milk .... creating a rod for your own back if you ask me.

An interesting side-note to this is that there is a definite correlation between some kinds of degenerative nerve diseases and babies fed exclusively on cow's milk. Human milk has specific nutrients that support the development of brain and nerve tissue, nutrients not found nearly as abundantly in cow's milk.

I agree that nursing is preferable to bottle. I nursed all 3 of my children for a year or more. With that said, feeding a child is necessary, these people didn't.

My oldest didn't get solid food or cow's milk until he was a year old. I breast-fed and supplemented with formula because he was such a little pig that I couldn't produce enough for him!!!! (He was 9 lbs. 12 oz. at birth )

Wow. That's big. I was 4 lbs and in an incubator for a month, breech, premature emergency cesarian, placenta coming out before me even! Born on Christmas day. My mother used a breast pump and brought it to the hospital for my first month. I'm lucky to be alive, that was in 1961. You guys are lucky I'm here!

Did your mama weigh 90 lbs. when she got pregnant and 150 lbs. when she delivered?????

It indeed sounds very rational to me... Vegans do not use animal product because they think it's cruel to use animals for this. What wouldn't make any sense is to refuse breast feeding on the same grounds (ie, that it would be cruel for the mother).

Okay, a few points.

A six week old shouldn't know what soy milk tastes like because the should receive all nutrition from breastfeeding.

A six month old shouldn't know what soy milk tastes like because the should still receive liquid dairy from breastfeeding.

A six year old shouldn't know what soy milk tastes like because plants don't produce milk.

Eat meat. It's good for you. The most nutritious vegan diet doesn't compare to a well balanced diet of all food groups.

Actually the meat-based diet has been implicated (but the evidence is only slightly more damning than the case against cigarettes) in the development of a wide range of disease conditions--not the least of which are heart disease and colon cancer. There is also a connection with prostate cancer and meat consumption.
