Which part of that part do you want back ? Slavery ? , Jim Crow laws ? The good stuff is sadly intertwined with the bad stuff, the two are inseperable.

There's nothing wrong with feeling pride with where you come from. I'd hope all of you both north and south feel that. But why express that pride by hearkening back to some mythical golden age that was over 140 years ago ?
The problem is, those ignorant of southern ways and traditions assume that we're talking about slavery and such but assumptions are notoriously wrong. There's a lot more to the historical south than the Civil War and many of these things have a romantic ring to them which is why there's so many romance novels set in the Old South. And then there's the simple things like cooking red beans and rice on Mondays (because it was laundry day and the beans could cook unattended), taking food to a neighbor's house when someone in their family dies, dinner on the grounds at church, sitting out under the trees in the evenings drinking sweet tea with the neighbors, etc. A lot of this has gone by the wayside as more and more Yankees move in and that really sucks for those of us that remember those days. One thing a true southerner never tolerates though is some damn Yankee coming down here begging for a job and then berating our way of life!!! We just tell them to pack their Yankee bags and carry their Yankee asses back up north and starve!!!!!!

For most of the people you are talking about, just getting them to a church... any church... would be a monumental accomplishment.

I'm in agreeement with you on this.

In the world of PC there is no room for a sense of perspective or a sense of humor.

When I was working in Virginia (and I know that's not the real south for a Gulf Coast southerner ) I heard plenty of jokes about my accent and about the north, and the rivalry with the yanks. No problem.

I'm beginning to agree with Mrs. M on the definition of "south" these days.

Its such a shame that other Yanks didn't see it that way. Maybe if the Union had marched through The hills then POM would have turned out different!
