Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
Damn! I meant to put up a poll but hit the wrong thing. Oh well, my question is do you think "the South shall rise again" and other means of Southern Pride is a call for slavery?

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
Because its within the edit time you might be able to edit the first post and delete it, start a new thread with a poll an...yeah never mind. (I would suggest getting a mod to edit in a poll but that' an even worse solution.)
The Klan's protest was absolutely justified and warranted imo, this cowardly PC garbage has to come an end. And over what? A song is all!! |

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
It's not a call for slavery, but saying "the South will rise again" does seem to be calling for an illegal insurrection against the rest of the States.

The idea that expressions of Southern pride today are equal with a wish for the return of slavery seems dump imo.

And i'm not saying that as someone who is apologist/sympthetic to state's independance movements - you saw how tough i was on Palin over the AIP crap and what i think states that wish to suceed/leave the Union. |

I can assure you that we're not calling for an insurrection but rather it's just fun teasing directed at the Yankees. It's really no different than watching a football game and doing things like the Gator Chomp or the Seminole Chop.

I agree but I've been challenged on this very forum about my Southern Pride!

There's the pride and the tradition of the saying, the fact people are used to it and its a distinction of those of us with a southern tradition, kind of like to say "yeah that's us". We rib the heathens of the north with it too of course.

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
Very true. Also we have been used to it for some time, its even a force of habbit to some folk - i see no reason at all for us to stop with the music or with our tradtions that may have dated to pre civil-war times. (Anybpdy who says "like slavery" in response is an ass).
One other thing is, there are loads of other variations. Like when i have spoken to Jazzy through the years and she has spoken about being a "daughter of the South" and "The Pride of the South" and it all has the same meaning. Which to remember our roots and be proud of our land and i think there's noting wrong with it at all.

If the South would’ve won we'd a had it made, I'd prob’ly run for President of the Southern State. The day Elvis passed away would be our national holiday, If the South would a won we'd had a it made. I'd make my Supreme Court down in Texas, And we wouldn't have no killers gettin’off free. If they were proven guilty, then they would swing quickly, Instead of writin’ books and smilin’ on T.V. We'd all learn Cajun cookin’ in Louisiana, And I'd put that capitol back in Alabama. We'd put Florida on the right track ‘cause, we'd take Miami back, And throw all them pushers in the slammer. If the South would’ve won we'd a had it made, I'd prob’ly run for President of the Southern States. The day young Skynyrd died we’d show our Southern Pride, If the South would a won we'd had a it made. I'd have all the whiskey made in Tennessee, And all the horses raised in those Kentucky hills. The national treasury would be in Tupelo, Mississippi And I'd put Hank Williams’ picture on one hundred dollar bills. I'd have all the cars made in the Carolina's, And I'd ban all the ones made in China. I'd have every girl and child sent to Georgia to learn to smile, And talk with that southern accent that drives me wild. I'd have all the fiddles made in Virginia ‘Cause they sure can make 'em sound so fine. I'm goin’ up on Wolverton mountain and see ol’ Clifton Clowers, And have a sip of his good ol’ Arkansas wine. Hey, if the South woulda won we'd had it made I'd prob’ly run for President of the Southern States, When Patsy Cline passed away that would be our national holiday, If the South woulda won we'd a had it made. If the South woulda won we'd a had it made. We might even be better off.

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
I absolutely agree with that. We are one nation and we should always stay that way. However like that bottom line says, we would have been so much better off had we actually won the war!

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
But guys ( and gals ) I hate to point it out but the notion of The South Rising ( capital letters intentional ) does seem to imply a certain period in time ie before the civil war, or during the war itself when the CSA existed. In which case I'm afraid you have to take the rough with the smooth because slavery was an integral part of that set up. Saying you want the south to rise again implies a past set up. Which part of that part do you want back ? Slavery ? , Jim Crow laws ? The good stuff is sadly intertwined with the bad stuff, the two are inseperable.
There's nothing wrong with feeling pride with where you come from. I'd hope all of you both north and south feel that. But why express that pride by hearkening back to some mythical golden age that was over 140 years ago ?

Re: "The South shall rise again" riles the PC crowd
I don't think it impliesthe past set up, or that we won't it back, just the saying will always obviously be refferenced to where it originated from. Which isn't even accurate either.
