Thread: Comparison between those who hate the WBC and those who hate the Danish cartoonists

Comparison between those who hate the WBC and those who hate the Danish cartoonists

I see the people who condone violence against WBC members for personally offending them as no better than knuckle-dragging Muslim fanatics who threw a hissy fit over the Danish cartoons a few years ago and who called for violence against those behind the cartoons. Both the WBC and the Danish cartoonists live in Western countries with relatively tolerant legal systems, wherein the protection of controversial speech is guaranteed. Both countries have several people who want those legal systems to make exceptions for them.

    Poll

Option A: I condemn both the hypothetical murder of WBC members and the hypothetical murder of Danish cartoonists because I oppose violence in all cases other than self-defense.

Option B: I condone both the hypothetical murder of WBC members and the hypothetical murder of Danish cartoonists because I think that anyone who is deeply offended by the actions of someone else should be able to murder that person.

Option C: I condone the hypothetical murder of WBC members but condemn the hypothetical murder of Danish cartoonists because I love the U.S. military and could care less about the concerns of Muslim fanatics; people should only be allowed to practice non-self-defense violence for a cause that I personally agree with.

Option D: I condemn the hypothetical murder of WBC members but condone the hypothetical muder of Danish cartoonists because I am a Muslim and I could care less about the concerns of those who love the U.S. military; people should only be allowed to practice non-self-defense violence for a cause that I personally agree with.

    Option E: Other (please specify)

Re: Comparison between those who hate the WBC and those who hate the Danish cartoonis

Are we talking about a legal sense or a moral sense? I don't think many opposers of the WBC are atually advocating a law censering them, let alone killing them, but perhaps a more emotionally based form of vigilante justice. I'll give you an example: I don't support any legislative action against thier protests, they are proteccted by the 1st ammendment, but if they protested a friend of mine that was killed in the line of duty, I'd lay them the fuck out. If you are seriously trying to compare an emotional outburst against people praising the death of soldiers to murder based on a fuckin' cartoon, then you are really beyond logic.

I am speaking of the moral and emotional senses, but I have some people use that as justification for advocating legal changes as well.

Hypothetical Muslim somewhere in the EU "Okay, I live in a Western country, so I accept that there is a history of tolerance here, and I am not advocating any laws against blasphemy. However, if anyone ever desecrated a Koran in front of me, or wore an anti-Muslim shirt in front of me, I would lay them the fuck out. Yes, their freedom of expression is protected here, but I simply cannot control my emotions, so I should be able to use physical violence when I am deeply offended."

If you don't understand that all of this lies within the realm of the subjective, and that your notions of justifiable non-self-defense violence are a matter of opinion, just as fundamentalist Muslims' notions of justifiable non-self-defense violence are a matter of opinion, then you do not understand the nature of subjective and objective.

I think this thread is doomed from the start in that the destinction between moral and legal is just not there. That said, morally, I don't at all have a problem popping someone in the nose in response to certain offenses, the protest of a dead soldier certainly being one of them.

How do we go about resolving differences between the moral codes of hundreds of millions of citizens?

What do you think of the moral codes of anti-Vietnam War protesters, which permitted, and even encouraged, spitting on returning Vietnam War veterans?

Of course it's a matter of opinion, where did I argue it wasn't? You asked a subjective question, and I gave you a subjective answer, in fact it is an impossibility to have this discussion in an objetive manner. That said, the subjetive vs objective argument has been beaten to death on this forum, and yeah, there is no such thing as objectivly right or objectivly wrong, but so what? How does that translate to a real world context?

I think they are scumbags and that thier moral codes, or lack there of, are deplorable.

If you are looking for a way to make laws that appeal to everyone, you are going to be disappointed, as no such method exists.
