Since there has been so much talk about school teachers and how much they make, how much do you think they should make?
I scaled it to household income since that should vary in proportion to cost of living for different geographical areas.
As an added question, but not part of the poll, how many students do you think a school teacher should have in their classroom? My son's 3rd grade teacher has 28 students this year, which seems a bit ridiculous. I think ~20 kids is more of a reasonable number.
Here's a list of household income by state:

The highest state is $79k and the lowest is $36k.

You could be talking about CEO pay and your statement would still make sense.

It depends on what their individual services are worth to the public as determined by considering a variety of factors.
A teacher should make as much as he or she can negotiate for.
When I was growing up, we averaged between 25-30 students per class. I think that's pretty good...
That's how its done for CEO's which is therefore not surprising why they never strike.
They can piss and moan all they want. They work 9 months out of the year, get off at 2:30 every day, have state benefits and insurance.
America is still a place of opportunity. If they don't like their life, they can go into another line of work. I can assure you someone will step up the get perks of teaching.
I wonder... I really do.
Class size is seen as the one most significant factor in student achievement.
If we want to break the cycle of poverty in poor neighborhoods we best be thinking of class sizes of 9 and less. If we want to compete with China and India we better be thinking of class sizes under 18 everywhere else.
Steve, I am not slamming or insulting you so please don't take it personally.
It bothers me unbelievably to hear the speech patterns of middle America today. It is pretty common to meet people with speech limited to 300 word active vocabularies, slang, foul mouthed, and filled with double negatives. There is no understanding of simple maths and 1/5 of Americans can not find the USA on a map of the World. 25-30 student class size may be OK in the sense that the students could be pushed through the system without anyone getting injured.. But where is the education?
YouTube - Uhhh...what did she just say?? Miss Teen South Carolina 2007
"There is no gain in arguing with a poo flinging monkey. While his
gibbering and raucous cries of victory may seem obnoxious in your ears
as you walk away, he will soon be quietly sitting behind his bars again
and licking his own feces off his fingers as you carry on with your day."
Why would teachers income be a function of local income scales? Teachers in ghettos would make less than teachers in rich neighborhoods? Thats whats gotten us into this mess in the first place!
What is wrong with the free enterprise system we have right now? Why is the present pattern bad? Why should there be any change?
(Other than thaT we do have to put more focus on reducing class sizes, which probably means hiring 50% more teachers.)

Lol, 2:30? And leave their class unattended for the last 30 or 60 minutes? I'm sure lesson plans and grading just get done on their own without any teacher time or effort as well.
Answer the question Sunshine, how much should they make? A nurse makes more than 100% of the average household income, probably 125% to 150%. How much should a teacher make? 25% of the average household income? You're avoiding the question.

That's simply not true. My oldest sister taught High School for 25 years and seldom left the school before 4pm then still had papers to grade at home and things to get ready for the next day. Then there's summer school. Teachers work more then people give them credit for. But, anyone that has really taught any classes would know that.
