East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. is facing an onslaught of criticism for a comment he made to a reporter in the wake of four East Haven police officers’ arrests Tuesday morning.
After giving more than a dozen interviews to the media Tuesday, the day that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested four of his officers for systematic mistreatment of Latino residents, Maturo was asked by a WPIX TV reporter about what he would be doing for the local Latino community that night. His response — “I might have tacos when I go home, I’m not quite sure yet” — amplified the outrage of the local residents over the police department scandal and sparked calls for Maturo’s resignation.

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The office of East Haven's mayor was blasted with prank phone calls and a delivery of hundreds of tacos Thursday after his now-famous quip that he would address accusations of anti-Latino bias by eating tacos, a remark that left emotions raw in the town's large Hispanic community.
Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. has apologized several times but resisted calls for his resignation over remarks he made to a television reporter following Tuesday's arrests of four town police officers, men described by one FBI official as "bullies with badges."
Maturo held regular meetings Thursday as Connecticut's Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission called on him to resign.
"The Latino community is upset and deeply wounded in what should have been a day of redemption for them," the commission's acting executive director, Werner Oyandel, said in a written statement, calling the comment "unprofessional and given in poor taste."
An immigration rights group, Reform Immigration for America, delivered 400 tacos to his Town Hall office in protest, though Maturo had left shortly beforehand for a meeting. A soup kitchen picked up the tacos, but one was left symbolically for the mayor.
East Haven has long been known for it's asshole cops and racial profiling. The good news in all of this is that 4 of the assholes were arrested for their mistreatment of Latinos. I was kind of surprised to see that this had made it to national news, so I thought I post the story here.
Many people are calling for the mayor's resignation. I'm not sure if that's really called for, but his comment was completely stupid and bone-headed. I hope the mayor likes tacos.

I'm laughing quite a bit at the taco deliveries, and there have been a few taco jokes flying around.. It's funny when a politician puts his foot so firmly in his mouth.
Mmmmmm....foot tacos!

Oh, gross man...i don't even like Tacos as it is!

Free tacos for the mayor...........sweet!
Take a good hard look, it's coming.
I love tacos. Perhaps I should get on camera and say something provacative about them. I also like beer.. hmmmm.....
How are free tacos a protest? That sounds awesome.
I don't think resignation is necessary (though I'm not entirely familiar with the history of this mayor), but I giant apology is probably in order. At least if he wants to be an effective mayor at all.

Your solution to resolving a problem, is to drink beer that sucks?

I don't get what all the fuss is about. Should he have said he was having enchiladas instead?

Four of his police officers had just been arrested for abuse and mistreatment of latinos. When a reporter asked him "what he would be doing for the local Latino community that night", a less offensive answer would have been something like "I'll be meeting with Latino leaders in my community to discuss the options, blah blah blah...". I know some people loathe that awfull "political correctness" stuff, but sometimes, that's what politicians have to do. Or they can deal with a shitstorm of tacos.
